Patriots Running Back Antonio Gibson Out for Season With a Torn ACL
The New England Patriots have plenty to feel optimistic about following their surprising 23–20 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night, a game that showcased their resilience and determination. However, amid the celebration, there is a significant cause for concern. Running back Antonio Gibson was unable to finish the game and was later diagnosed with a torn ACL. The injury occurred during a crucial play when Gibson absorbed a forceful collision while, unfortunately, fumbling the football.
Gibson has been a valuable asset to the Patriots, primarily serving as one of their top kickoff returners—highlighted by a spectacular 90-yard return for a touchdown in Week 2. Within the running back rotation, he was establishing himself as the third option behind starter Rhamondre Stevenson and promising rookie TreVeyon Henderson. Given Stevenson’s recent struggles with ball security, there were signs that Gibson’s role on offense was about to be expanded, which could have provided the team with much-needed depth and stability in the backfield.
A six-year veteran, Gibson has contributed steadily this season, participating in 16.6% of the offensive snaps and amassing 25 carries for 106 yards, along with one touchdown. His versatility and experience have made him an important cog in the Patriots’ offensive schemes. Following the emotionally charged upset over the Bills, Gibson stood near the entrance to the team’s locker room, where he was warmly greeted by his teammates. The concern on their faces was evident, as many players took a moment to check on him, underscoring the respect and camaraderie he has earned within the locker room. This injury not only poses a significant setback for Gibson individually but also presents a challenge for the Patriots as they navigate the remainder of the season. While bittersweet, this injury does add more reps to the workload of high second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson, who is now going to get a bigger slice of the pie as the season progresses.
