Xavien Howard Returns to Football, Signs with Colts

Plagued by a string of injuries in their cornerback corps, the Colts have taken a decisive step by signing veteran Xavien Howard as a potential remedy. Despite sitting out the entire 2024 season, the organization hopes Howard can revive the elite form that once defined his career and bolster a struggling secondary.

The signing was initially revealed by Howard’s agent, David Canter, before the Colts officially announced the move. This marks Howard’s first return to an active NFL roster since the Miami Dolphins released the four-time Pro Bowler and 2020 All-Pro in February 2024. Once renowned for his exceptional coverage, Howard earned a reputation as a lockdown defender, leading the league in interceptions twice—snagging 10 picks in 2020 and tying for the lead with 7 in 2018. Over his career, the 32-year-old cornerback has compiled an impressive stat line: 29 interceptions, 95 passes defended, and 331 total tackles.

The lingering question, however, is whether Howard, now over 30, still possesses the speed and instinctual quickness to shadow the NFL’s fleet-footed younger receivers. Howard was never the fastest cornerback to begin with, and after a year away from the gridiron, his ability to rebound quickly remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the Colts are willing to roll the dice, integrating him into their retooled secondary. This revamped unit has already gained key additions this offseason, including Charvarius Ward and Camryn Bynum, signaling the team’s commitment to shoring up their pass defense and elevating the secondary’s performance.
