Chargers Tackle the Blind Side with Slater Extension
The Chargers locked up one of the NFL's premier young tackles this week, inking Rashawn Slater to a lucrative contract extension. While Justin Herbert undoubtedly reigns as the Chargers' most valuable asset, Slater is undeniably a strong contender for the second spot. His importance to the team’s present and future cannot be overstated.
The Chargers and their star left tackle agreed to a four-year, $114 million contract extension, featuring a substantial $92 million in guaranteed money—a deal initially reported by Ian Rapoport. The team subsequently announced the extension, confirming that Slater now stands as the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league on an annual basis, commanding a staggering $28.5 million per year. This significant investment underscores the Chargers’ commitment to protecting their franchise quarterback and solidifying their offensive line for years to come.
Slater, a two-time Pro Bowler since joining Los Angeles as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2021 draft, was initially poised to play under his $19 million fifth-year rookie option, leaving his long-term future with the team uncertain beyond 2025. Recognizing his value and wanting to avoid any potential distractions, the Chargers moved swiftly to secure his services.
Notably, Slater reported to training camp on July 16 despite the ongoing negotiations for a new deal, signaling his dedication to the team. General Manager Joe Hortiz acknowledged the situation, assuring local reporters that negotiations were actively progressing. Beyond his exceptional on-field performance, Slater's leadership qualities are highly valued within the organization. A team captain and a respected figure in the locker room, he is deeply admired by his teammates.
“Rashawn is such a great teammate, great locker room guy,” Herbert said last season, emphasizing Slater’s positive influence on the team dynamic. “He’s competitive, very smart, very intelligent.”
Furthermore, fellow tackle Joe Alt acknowledged Slater’s significant contribution to his success as a rookie, highlighting Slater’s willingness to mentor and guide younger players. In 2024, Slater’s outstanding performance earned him not only a Pro Bowl selection but also an All-AFC nod, with many believing he was deserving of All-Pro honors as well.
Slater’s 2024 season was nothing short of exceptional, evidenced by his impressive 91.1 overall Pro Football Focus grade—a mark that placed him second among all offensive tackles in the NFL. His prowess in pass protection was equally remarkable, as he recorded a 90.4 pass-blocking grade, ranking third among tackles league-wide. Moreover, his run-blocking abilities were also top-tier, earning an 82.8 grade that positioned him fifth among players in his position group.
It goes without further mention how important it was to get this deal behind them. For Slater, he now has the financial security he desired and is free to return to practicing with the team. From the team's perspective, they now have their franchise left tackle solidified for the foreseeable future—as both sides can shift their full focus to the ultimate goal: winning a Super Bowl.
