Seahawks Cut Noah Fant, Create Room for Others to Get Opportunity

On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks disclosed that they had parted ways with veteran tight end Noah Fant. Merely last March, the 27-year-old pass catcher signed a two-year, $21 million contract extension. As a result, his $8.5 million base salary for the upcoming season has now been removed from Seattle’s financial obligations.

According to NFL Media, Fant was also set to earn an additional $510,000 in per-game roster bonuses this season, so his departure frees up approximately $9 million in total cash. Fant arrived in Seattle via the notable Russell Wilson trade from the Denver Broncos, yet he never replicated the level of output he showed during his initial three seasons in Denver. Over 48 contests spanning three years with the Seahawks, the Iowa product amassed 130 receptions for 1,400 yards and five touchdowns.

In the 2024 season, Fant ranked as Seattle’s fourth-leading receiver, hauling in 48 passes for 500 yards and one touchdown. With his release, greater opportunities now emerge for AJ Barner and Eric Saubert to assume more significant roles in an offensive unit that will be guided by new quarterback Sam Darnold. Among those mentioned, rookie tight end Elijah Arroyo may be in line to be the biggest beneficiary of Fant's release, as he looks to contribute in his first season after being drafted from the University of Miami.

Despite his release, I expect Fant to find a home soon, as the need for an athletic, pass-catching tight end is always high. He’s also been productive as of late and hasn’t shown signs of a significant fall-off. It remains to be seen just how many teams will show interest, but I believe it’s only a matter of time before we see him suited up again for an NFL club.
