Cowboys Trade for QB Milton III
The Dallas Cowboys’ search for a reliable backup quarterback to support Dak Prescott has led them to acquire Joe Milton III. On Thursday, the Cowboys secured Milton along with a 2025 seventh-round pick (No. 217) from the New England Patriots, trading away a 2025 fifth-round pick (No. 171) in return.
Initial discussions between the two teams began several weeks ago and intensified during the NFL’s annual meeting this week, highlighting the Cowboys’ proactive approach to addressing their backup quarterback situation. The urgency grew notably after Cooper Rush, who had previously filled the backup role, signed a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens that included $4.2 million guaranteed—leaving Dallas in need of fresh options. Earlier in free agency, the Cowboys showed interest in Jacoby Brissett, a seasoned signal-caller, but he ultimately committed to the Arizona Cardinals, prompting the Cowboys to look elsewhere.
Joe Milton III, a sixth-round draft pick last year, showed promising flashes toward the end of the Patriots’ season. In New England’s season finale versus the Buffalo Bills, Milton showcased his skills by completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing on the ground with a rushing score. Although Milton spent most of the 2023 season as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback—behind starter Drake Maye, a first-round pick last year, and Brissett—his late-season performance highlighted his potential as a dependable backup. It’s worth noting that the Patriots bolstered their quarterback depth last month by signing Joshua Dobbs in free agency, which may have factored into their willingness to part with Milton.
