Dolphins and Ramsey Agree to Mutually Split Ways
One of the most dominant defensive backs of the past decade appears to be on the move, with significant news emerging from Miami this week. The Miami Dolphins and their star cornerback, Jalen Ramsey, have mutually agreed to explore trade possibilities, signaling a major shift for the team's defensive unit. Last season, three key players each started 17 games for the Dolphins' defense, but as the offseason unfolds, only one of those stalwarts is expected to remain with the team heading into next year.
Miami is clearly in the midst of a defensive rebuild, and without Ramsey anchoring the secondary, the team is expected to shift toward a more simplified scheme—one designed to accommodate and develop a younger, less experienced defensive backfield. Ramsey, a three-time All-Pro and team captain last season, was anticipated to be a cornerstone for the Dolphins’ defense amid significant restructuring. Although his two interceptions were the fewest he’s recorded in five seasons, Ramsey demonstrated no obvious decline in performance during his ninth professional year. He started 17 games for the second time in three years, reliably matching up against opposing offenses’ top receivers.
Additionally, Ramsey set a personal best with four quarterback hits and notched six tackles for loss, the highest since his standout 2021 All-Pro season with the Rams. With Ramsey squarely on the trade block, this cements the franchise’s rapidly approaching challenging crossroads. Losing a player of Ramsey’s caliber and leadership is undeniably a massive blow to a defense that has been showing signs of decline and inconsistency. With the draft approaching, I would expect this situation with Ramsey to be resolved sooner rather than later.
