Giants Land Jameis Winston in Attempt to Solidify QB Room
The New York Giants have signed quarterback Jameis Winston, a notable addition to their roster as they seek to add much-needed depth to their QB room. Winston, who was the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, brings considerable experience to the field. Over his career, he has played in 105 games, starting in 87 of them, for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2015 to 2019, the New Orleans Saints between 2020 and 2023, and most recently, the Cleveland Browns in 2024.
Statistically, Winston has completed 1,944 passes out of 3,178 attempts, yielding a completion rate of 61.2 percent. Over his career, he has thrown for an impressive 24,225 yards, accumulating 154 touchdowns against 111 interceptions. Additionally, Winston showcases versatility as an athlete, having rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 12 touchdowns throughout his tenure in the NFL. At 31 years old, the former Florida State QB isn’t quite the athlete he once was, yet he is still able to make a play with his legs from time to time.
Notably, after five relatively productive seasons with the Buccaneers, Winston remains the franchise's all-time leader in several key categories, including pass attempts, completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes. This record underscores his impact on the team during his tenure with them while also shedding light on the history of Tampa’s QBs. In 2019, Winston became one of only nine players in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a single season. He made headlines by becoming the first player ever to pass for at least 450 yards in consecutive games during said season.
Following his stint in Tampa Bay, Winston spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, where he continued to develop his skills. In 2024, while playing for Cleveland, he participated in 12 games, making seven starts and averaging 291 yards per game. During this time, he threw for 13 touchdowns, although he also faced challenges with 12 interceptions.
Looking ahead, the expectation for Winston is to step into a backup role behind veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson has openly expressed his ambition to reclaim the starting position, and his experience is expected to provide valuable guidance to Winston as he continues to adapt within the Giants' system. The dynamic between the two could set the stage for an intriguing quarterback competition and ultimately contribute to the Giants' quest for success in the upcoming season.
