Broncos Land Pro Bowl TE Evan Engram

It’s been quite a while since the Denver Broncos had a marquee talent at the tight end position. In fact, one could argue that it dates back to Julius Thomas in 2013, when he played a monumental role in Peyton Manning’s record-shattering MVP season. However, that situation is poised to change dramatically, as the Broncos have finalized a deal to bring in Evan Engram, who was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On Wednesday, the Broncos announced the signing of two-time Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram to a two-year deal, a move confirmed by his agent, Mike McCarthy, on social media. This lucrative contract is valued at $23 million, with an impressive $16.5 million fully guaranteed. The Broncos have been in desperate need of an upgrade at the tight end position in recent seasons, and Engram’s acquisition is a significant step forward. His release by the Jaguars was primarily a salary cap decision, saving $5.98 million, but it also opened the door for Denver to land a highly talented playmaker.

At 30 years old, Engram is no stranger to high-level football. He signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Jaguars in March 2022 and subsequently posted career highs in receptions (73) and receiving yards (766) that season. Heading into 2023, he was expected to build on that success, and the Jaguars initially planned to retain him before ultimately opting for a different direction. However, Engram not only matched his previous season’s production but surpassed it, catching an impressive 114 passes—the second most in franchise history and the second most by a tight end in NFL history. His 2023 campaign resulted in 963 yards and four touchdown receptions, further solidifying him as a pivotal offensive weapon.

Despite his accomplishments, Engram faced challenges in the previous season, where hamstring and shoulder injuries sidelined him for eight games. He ultimately recorded 47 catches for 365 yards and a touchdown in just nine games, proving he could still produce even amid adversity.

Engram’s journey began when he was drafted 23rd overall by the New York Giants in 2017. Over five seasons with the team, he compiled 262 receptions, 2,828 yards, and 16 touchdowns. His transition to the Jaguars marked a new chapter in his career, and now, as he dons the Denver Broncos' colors, there is significant anticipation surrounding his potential impact on the team. The addition of Engram will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the Broncos' offense and rookie quarterback Bo Nix.
