Steelers Trade for DK Metcalf, Immediately Extend Him to a Five-Year Deal
The NFL offseason is often a whirlwind of activity, marked by high-profile players switching teams in pursuit of lucrative contracts or, more importantly, the ultimate ambition of clinching a Super Bowl title. Recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines by trading for star wide receiver DK Metcalf, aiming to bolster their offensive arsenal in a move that could significantly impact their offense in the upcoming season. The Steelers finalized a deal with the Seattle Seahawks, sending a second-round pick (52nd overall) and a seventh-round pick (223rd overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft to Seattle while also receiving the Seahawks' sixth-round pick (185th overall) in the same draft. Following the trade, Metcalf signed a lucrative five-year contract worth $150 million, solidifying his place as one of the league's highest-paid receivers.
Drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf enjoyed a stellar six-season tenure in Seattle, where he emerged as one of the league’s premier deep threats. Over the course of 97 games, including 93 starts, he amassed 438 receptions for 6,324 yards, averaging 14.4 yards per catch and racking up 48 touchdowns. His 48 touchdown receptions rank eighth among active NFL players. Metcalf’s dynamic playmaking ability has resulted in 15 career 100-yard receiving games, including a standout performance against Pittsburgh in 2023 and a career-high 177-yard game against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. His postseason track record is equally impressive, with two 100-yard receiving games and a notable knack for explosive plays, as shown by his 13 receptions of 50 yards or more, which ranks seventh among active receivers.
Metcalf has earned several accolades that highlight his dominance on the field. He was named a second-team Associated Press All-Pro in 2020 and earned Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2023. He achieved his third 1,000-yard season in 2023, finishing with 66 receptions for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns while playing in 16 games. Among those scores was a 73-yard touchdown, the longest play from scrimmage for the Seahawks that season. His back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns made him just the seventh player in Seahawks history to accomplish that feat.
In 2022, Metcalf posted career highs with 90 receptions, the fourth-most in franchise history, while topping 1,000 receiving yards for the second consecutive year. His 2021 season saw him lead the Seahawks with 75 receptions and 12 touchdowns, ranking fourth in the NFL in touchdown receptions and tying for the third-most in a single season in franchise history. Among his many highlight-reel moments, his 84-yard touchdown reception against the New Orleans Saints stands out as the third-longest play in Seahawks history, a testament to his explosive speed and game-changing ability.
Now paired with former Georgia wide receiver George Pickens, Metcalf will look to form one of the most formidable wide receiver duos in the NFL. This move signals a clear shift in Pittsburgh’s focus toward the offensive side of the ball, something Steelers fans have long hoped for, as offensive struggles have been their Achilles' heel in recent seasons. However, despite this high-profile addition, the Steelers still have a glaring question mark at quarterback, a problem that remains unaddressed. While reports suggest Pittsburgh is actively exploring options at the position, no move has been made yet. With the NFL Draft approaching, selecting a quarterback remains a possibility, though this year’s draft class is widely regarded as weak at the position.
