What’s the Next Step for WR Keenan Allen?

With longtime NFL veteran Keenan Allen set to explore free agency, it’s worth examining the potential scenarios that could unfold for the former All-Pro.

In a revealing January interview, Allen made it clear that his preferred landing spots this offseason are the Bears, Chargers, or Rams. His limited focus could complicate matters for other teams interested in his services. While surprise suitors can't be ruled out, Allen may need extra convincing to consider offers beyond his preferred trio.

Last season, Allen recorded 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns over 15 games. While respectable, these numbers fall well short of the elite production he posted during his prime with the Chargers, where he consistently surpassed 100 catches and 1,000 yards.

A closer look at Allen’s 2023 performance shows a noticeable decline across multiple metrics. Among receivers with at least 100 targets, PFF ranked him 37th in both receiving grade (68.2) and yards per route run (1.36). For comparison, in his final season with the Chargers, he ranked 10th and 9th in those same categories, highlighting a steep drop-off. It’s worth considering how much of this decline was due to Allen’s play versus the turmoil surrounding the Bears, whose chaotic season ultimately led to the midseason firing of head coach Matt Eberflus.

On a more optimistic note, the Bears enter the offseason with the sixth-most cap space, per Spotrac, making a reunion with Allen financially viable—especially if he’s willing to negotiate a team-friendly deal. Last season, Allen became one of Caleb Williams’ top targets, commanding 27.3% of the team’s targets over 15 games, including five outings with double-digit targets.

Bringing Allen back for another year or two could provide crucial support for Williams as he adjusts to the NFL. One way or another, the next few months will be pivotal for Allen and the rest of the league as free agency unfolds.
