Bengals Leaning Toward Franchise Tagging Tee Higgins
Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins is expected to play under the franchise tag for a second straight season, according to a report from SI.com. The Bengals are expected to apply the non-exclusive franchise tag, which allows other teams to make offers for Higgins. If an offer is made, Cincinnati can either match it or let him go in exchange for first-round draft picks.
This setup could create a competitive market for Higgins, but the Bengals’ approach this year appears to be a notable shift from last season’s prolonged contract standoff. Unlike last year, when negotiations dragged on without a resolution, the team now seems intent on securing a long-term deal after utilizing the franchise tag, as noted by James Rapien of SI.
The negotiation window is critical, as both sides have from February 18 to March 4 to reach an agreement before the franchise tag is officially applied. According to ESPN, the Bengals also plan to sign star receiver Ja’Marr Chase and pass rusher Trey Hendrickson to long-term deals, further reinforcing their commitment to winning a Super Bowl.
The 26-year-old Higgins had a strong season, recording 73 receptions on 109 targets for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, injuries hampered his campaign, limiting him to 12 games, including nine starts. Despite battling hamstring, quad, and ankle injuries, he remained a key contributor to Cincinnati’s offense.
Through five seasons with the Bengals, Higgins has proven himself as a reliable playmaker, hauling in 330 catches for 4,595 yards and 34 touchdowns. His ability to create mismatches on the field provides a significant boost to quarterback Joe Burrow, especially when paired with Ja’Marr Chase, who remains one of the league’s top wideouts. This combination helps solidify Cincinnati’s offense as one of the most dangerous in the NFL.
The next few months will be telling for the Bengals, but if they’re serious about making a Super Bowl push, keeping Higgins should be a priority.
