Mason Crosby Officially Retires from the NFL
Former Packers kicker Mason Crosby, who did not play in the NFL during the current season, has officially announced his retirement from professional football after an impressive 17-year career. Crosby, now 40 years old, shared the news on Tuesday during "The Mason Crosby Show," which airs on Milwaukee's 105.7 The Fan. In a heartfelt reflection on his journey, he expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity that came his way in 2007 when he was drafted in the sixth round out of the University of Colorado. "I’m just so, so thankful, so grateful for the opportunity to come to Green Bay in 2007, to become a Packer and to be a part of this fraternity and legacy, the history of the Green Bay Packers," Crosby stated, showcasing the pride he feels about his long association with the team.
Throughout his remarkable tenure, Crosby solidified his place in Packers history, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer after playing with the team from 2007 to 2022. His career statistics are impressive: he successfully completed 81.3% of his field goal attempts, converting 400 of 492 opportunities, and demonstrated exceptional reliability by making 97.2% of his extra point attempts, finishing with 739 out of 760.
In a pivotal decision, the Packers chose not to re-sign Crosby in 2023, opting instead to draft Anders Carlson in the sixth round of that year’s NFL Draft. This marked the end of an era, as Crosby played a mere three games for the New York Giants in 2023, successfully converting 5 of 7 field goal attempts. Despite stepping away from the game this season, Crosby's impact remains evident in his career tally of 1,918 points while with Green Bay. This incredible figure places him 864 points ahead of the next highest scorer for the Packers. Former kicker Ryan Longwell, who played for the team from 1997 to 2005, is in second place on the franchise's scoring list with 1,054 points.
Overall, after accounting for his three games with the Giants, Crosby finished his storied NFL career with a total of 1,939 points, placing him 11th in NFL history. As he embarks on this new chapter post-retirement, Mason Crosby leaves behind a legacy marked by determination, skill, and a profound connection to the famed Green Bay Packers.
