Jets Add Veteran Defensive Coordinator to Coaching Staff
The Jets have made yet another move with their coaching staff by hiring Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator. This decision comes on the heels of Wilks' impressive performance as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Under his leadership, the 49ers' defense not only excelled but also finished tied for first in interceptions with a remarkable total of 22. Additionally, they ranked third in scoring defense, allowing an average of just 17.5 points per game, and secured the third position in rush defense, yielding only 89.7 yards per game. Furthermore, they demonstrated dominance in pass defense, ranking fifth with an average of only 5.86 yards lost per pass play. As he transitions to New York, Wilks will be tasked with overseeing all defensive play-calling, working closely with first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, who will benefit from Wilks’ extensive experience.
At 55 years old, Wilks brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role, having gained valuable head-coaching experience with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. His tenure there was marked by challenges, but it laid the groundwork for his coaching philosophy. More recently, he served as the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2022 for 12 games, stepping in after the dismissal of Matt Rhule. During his time as interim head coach, he managed to guide the Panthers to a 6-6 record, showcasing his ability to foster resilience and teamwork within the squad during a tumultuous period.
Wilks has deep-rooted connections to the Panthers organization, starting with his first stint there in 2012 when he was hired by Ron Rivera as the defensive backs coach. His rise was swift; by 2015-2016, he had been promoted to assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, and shortly thereafter, he assumed the role of assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2017. Additionally, Wilks has honed his skills as a defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns in 2019 and at the collegiate level with the Missouri Tigers in 2021. His comprehensive experience across various coaching roles makes him a valuable asset as he prepares to bolster the Jets’ defense.
