Former Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh Drawing Interest Around the League

Since his unexpected departure from the Jets organization during the season, Robert Saleh has quickly become one of the most sought-after names in the league for teams searching for a new head coach. The Dallas Cowboys, in particular, have reportedly taken a keen interest in the former New York Jets head coach, who was let go by owner Woody Johnson just five games into the season—a decision that surprised many fans and analysts alike. Saleh, who had built a reputation for his defensive acumen and charismatic leadership, endured a tumultuous tenure in New York, finishing with a record of 20-36. However, in his defense, the team he inherited was not one vying for contention, and even when they seemed poised to compete following the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, things unraveled when the veteran QB tore his Achilles in the opening game of 2023.

Saleh is now positioning himself as a viable candidate for the Jaguars' coaching vacancy, according to a report from The Athletic. This resurgence in interest comes despite the abrupt end to his previous tenure and hints at Saleh's potential to turn around a struggling franchise with his innovative approach and motivational skills.

While the possibility of Saleh landing in Jacksonville might initially strike some observers as coming out of "left field," The Athletic noted that there is a significant amount of “real buzz” surrounding his chances in the Florida market. This emerging narrative suggests that teams are willing to look beyond Saleh's recent setback, recognizing that his experience and philosophy could be the keys to unlocking greater success. My main pushback on this potential acquisition is who Saleh would bring along as offensive coordinator, as the Jaguars are desperately trying to unlock Trevor Lawrence’s potential. Saleh is undoubtedly a defensive-minded coach, meaning that his supporting staff would have to be strong in order to get the best out of T-Law, especially after the Jags signed him to a massive $50+ million AAV deal.

It will be a telling few weeks for Saleh as he interviews with different teams with openings. I do believe he can be a quality coach if given the chance with a viable roster. That said, I don’t know how many teams are a great fit for him. In any case, we will have to wait and see what’s in store as the 2024 season approaches its close.
