Are the Jets & WR Garrett Wilson Possibly Headed Towards a Split?

The New York Jets find themselves in a disastrous situation, with their performance spiraling downwards and fueling growing rumors about possible trade moves involving their star wide receiver, Garrett Wilson. Currently, the Jets are one of the worst teams in the NFL, holding a 4-10 record, and have been throughout the course of Wilson’s career. As a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Wilson made an immediate impact on the field, quickly establishing himself as a formidable force. His rookie season concluded with an impressive 83 receptions for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns, earning him the prestigious Rookie of the Year accolade.

Wilson continues to impress, already on track for what could be his third consecutive 1,000-yard season of his blossoming career. This stellar performance places him in a prime position as talks of a potential contract extension loom on the horizon. However, Wilson recently commented on his uncertain future with the Jets, and his words hinted at the possibility of a trade. In an interview reported by ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Wilson candidly shared his perspective, saying, “I don’t know, man. I just go about my day…If they [extend me], that would be a blessing. It would be awesome. I love the Jets. At the end of the day, they were the ones that believed in me. But, yeah, I can’t be worrying about that.”

His remarks reveal a player who would certainly welcome the security and recognition of an extension, illustrating both his commitment to the team that initially invested in his talent and his understanding of the business side of professional sports. Despite his clear willingness to remain with the team, the Jets have yet to initiate any formal contract discussions.

New York finds itself in a very tough situation, with the roster largely constructed as of late to win now, as opposed to building toward the future, with the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams being added to the team over the past two years. If Wilson does decide to leave for one reason or another, it would be a significant setback for this Jets team, who struck gold selecting him in the draft. Ultimately, the decision will be made in the offseason, which is steadily approaching for the Jets, who are firmly out of contention.
