Alvin Kamara Likely Done for Season
There have been few bright spots on the New Orleans Saints roster this season, but running back Alvin Kamara has undoubtedly been one of them. Kamara has consistently demonstrated his professionalism and dedication to the team, standing out even as the Saints have struggled to put forth a quality product on the field. Unfortunately, the dynamic running back now faces the possibility of missing the remainder of the season due to a groin injury sustained during last week's disappointing loss to the Commanders.
This season, Kamara has made yet another significant impact, amassing an impressive 1,493 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns across 14 games. He achieved a personal best with 950 rushing yards—an impressive accomplishment for any running back, particularly in his eighth season. Furthermore, Kamara has also shone as the team’s leading receiver, racking up a team-high 68 receptions and 543 receiving yards, along with two receiving touchdowns. His versatility and ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game highlight not just his talent but also his vital role in the Saints' offense. Without him, this offense would be a shell of itself, much like it would be without him in years past. Kamara’s career has flown somewhat under the radar when speaking objectively about what he has actually done over the course of his career. He is the sixth active leading rusher, behind only the likes of Derrick Henry, Ezekiel Elliott, Aaron Jones, Nick Chubb, and Saquon Barkley. That alone is an impressive feat, but he is also the 45th active receiving leader and is number one as far as running backs go.
The Saints claimed Clyde Edwards-Helaire off waivers; he was formerly a first-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. Clyde showed extreme promise as a rookie in a season where he was very effective. However, things have steadily gone downhill for Edwards-Helaire, ultimately resulting in his release from the Chiefs. CEH does possess a skill set similar to Kamara's as a running back who can be effective in the passing game, albeit not at nearly as high a level, respectively. It will be interesting to see how soon and how effectively he is integrated in Kamara’s absence.
