Former All Pro Safety Jamal Adams Signs with Lions Practice Squad

Former NFL All-Pro Safety Jamal Adams has officially signed with the Detroit Lions' practice squad, adding a notable name to an already dynamic team. As he worked tirelessly to stay in shape at his home in Dallas, Adams received an unexpected phone call that could reshape his career. It was a familiar voice on the other end: Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn, who ran Adams' Pro Day in 2017, reached out to gauge Adams' interest in joining the Lions as a depth option on their defense—an area that has faced increasing challenges due to a spate of serious injuries.

The call caught Adams off guard, as he had begun to entertain the possibility that his professional playing days might be behind him. “They were like, ‘That’s A.G.,’ and I’m like, ‘A.G. with Detroit?’” he recalled with a mix of surprise and excitement. The recollection of their past connection sparked a renewed sense of hope within him. “So it was cool, man. Just to be here, I’m very fortunate and grateful for my opportunity.”

Now, with a fresh start in Detroit, Adams is ready to prove that he still has plenty to offer. As he steps onto the practice field, he brings with him a wealth of experience. Adams, in his prime, was easily one of the top safeties in the entire NFL. His hard-hitting ability, paired with his nose for the football, made him a human wrecking ball and a dominant force for the Jets and Seahawks. Now, in the latter end of his career, Adams could be used as a sub-linebacker in certain situations, as his speed and coverage skills have deteriorated to the extent that he cannot play safety. Regardless, the pickup for Detroit is a good one and provides both leadership and a much-needed body on a decimated defense.
