Tempers Flaring Between Rodgers and Jets
Heading into this season, I don’t think anyone could have imagined the Jets' season going as poorly as it has. The team has fired its head coach and general manager in the past few weeks, and now another drastic move could be forthcoming. It has been reported that the team may decide to place Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve or bench the future Hall of Famer in hopes of seemingly tanking for a better draft pick. This news comes on the heels of reports suggesting that team owner Woody Johnson recommended that the team bench Rodgers after their Week Four loss at the hands of the Denver Broncos.
Clearly, this plan never came to fruition, as Rodgers has remained the starter up until this point; however, as mentioned, that could change as soon as this week. It is also noteworthy that additional rumors are beginning to circulate that the quarterback wishes to continue playing next season, but only if it’s outside of New York. I don’t think it could get any worse for the Jets with this news arising due to the sheer number of moves they’ve made to try and make this work. They traded for Rodgers himself, brought in all of his former teammates, such as Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, and even Davante Adams; yet, this situation is still crumbling. Not to mention, they also brought in Nathaniel Hackett, a failed head coach who is Rodgers's friend from his days in Green Bay, to be offensive coordinator, only for him to be removed from play-calling duties during the season.
It has been a series of moves that are going to affect this team for years to come—a team that now appears to be on the brink of complete and utter collapse. It remains to be seen, of course, how much truth there is to these claims, but if the Jets' past is any indication of what’s to come, I think it is safe to assume things will go about as badly as possible. Ultimately, we will have to see what develops with Rodgers down the stretch of the season, as I believe that will have significant implications on what lies ahead. The Jets face the Seahawks on December 1st at 1:00 PM.
