Jets Fire GM Joe Douglas

The New York Jets are on the lookout for a new general manager after parting ways with Joe Douglas. It's never easy to see people lose their jobs, but in the world of sports, changes like this are often just part of the game. Douglas was let go amid a series of disappointing seasons, signaling that the Jets are serious about shaking things up. On top of that, former head coach Robert Saleh had already exited the scene over a month ago after being fired. It’s safe to say the team is hitting the reset button hard.

When we talk about a rebuild, it usually means the organization is ready to clean house, and that definitely seems to be the plan here. This time, however, I find it puzzling as to why Joe Douglas had to be let go. Douglas has abided by everything that ownership has rumored to want. They wanted Aaron Rodgers; he obliged. They wanted Davante Adams; he obliged. He made so many good moves on paper that just didn’t pan out for one reason or another. Now, I understand the counterargument that he is liable for those moves not working out, especially when he’s responsible for the hiring of Saleh. Yet, I still find it hard to ignore the highlights of his regime. This defense has been amazing for the better part of the past few years. He’s drafted pretty well outside of his 2020 class and the decision to draft Zach Wilson. Players like Breece Hall, Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, and Alijah Vera-Tucker are all near-household names that were drafted by Douglas. Clearly, New York isn’t willing to put much stock into these draft selections amidst the team's struggles to win games, and I suppose that is fair for a franchise that has been a joke for a very long time.

Fans are probably buzzing with curiosity about who the Jets will bring in next. Will they go for someone with a proven resume, or maybe attempt to bring in someone fresh to the scene? One thing is for sure: the next general manager is in for a load of work, and it won’t be easy to resolve this mess of a franchise. So, as the Jets embark on this journey, it’ll be interesting to see how they navigate the chaos and what moves they make to build a stronger team for the future. After all, in the NFL, it's all about potential and making the right calls to get back into the main stage of Super Bowl contention.
