Giants Cut Daniel Jones
Now-former Giants QB Daniel Jones met with team owner John Mara on Friday morning and officially requested his release from the team after it was announced that Jones would be benched for the rest of the season. Jones' release officially ends an era in New York characterized by treacherous lows and some inspiring highs. Jones' lone playoff victory in the 2022 playoffs, which ultimately led to the QB receiving a four-year extension, will surely hold significance for many Giants fans as they reflect on his tenure. Unfortunately, the NFL is a business, one where performance at a high level is expected week to week and year to year. Jones was never able to find consistency throughout his tenure with the Giants, which is reflected in his 3-13 record after signing the massive four-year extension following the 2022 season. The Giants will now roll with Tommy DeVito, who was able to provide the team with a spark last year down the stretch when Jones went down with an injury. DeVito is 3-3 as a starter for New York but managed to put together a three-game win streak last year with victories against Washington, New England, and Green Bay. This time around, DeVito will be thrust into the lineup to square off against Tampa Bay, who coincidentally were the opponents for Jones' first career start in 2019. While it will always remain true that Jones failed to live up to being the number six overall pick in the draft, one thing that must be respected is how he has handled himself throughout it all. Jones has been all class since he entered the league, much like his predecessor, Eli Manning. This trait seems to be overlooked when discussing Daniel, despite New York being well-renowned for being the most hostile market to play in. It takes a different kind of person to absorb an avalanche of insults hurled at them every single day and continue to act as if it doesn’t bother them; to that, I commend the QB. Jones will clear waivers this Monday at 4:00 PM, effectively making him a free agent with the liberty to choose his next team. It will be exciting to see where the veteran QB lands if he decides to sign during the season. Ultimately, we will have to wait and see what happens in the coming days as both sides look to acclimate to this new future.
