Lions Linebacker Alex Anzalone to Miss 6-8 Weeks with Injury
The latest setback in a series of injuries that have plagued the Detroit Lions' defense is the unfortunate loss of linebacker Alex Anzalone, who sustained a broken forearm during their game against the Jaguars. "Looks like he broke his forearm and will be out six to eight weeks," head coach Dan Campbell remarked somberly after the game, acknowledging the toll this injury takes on the team's defense as they move toward the playoffs. Anzalone has proven to be a vital asset since joining the Lions in 2021; he stands out as one of only six NFL players to achieve the remarkable feat of accumulating at least 375 tackles, 20 pass defenses, 20 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, and two interceptions. This season alone, he has tallied an impressive 56 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, and four passes defended.
In light of Anzalone's absence, the Lions have taken proactive measures and announced the signing of former Dolphins linebacker David Long to their practice squad. Long showed promise during his tenure in Miami, recording 38 tackles in just eight games—six of which he started—highlighting his ability to make contributions in critical moments. A prognosis of six to eight weeks for Anzalone's recovery could see him back on the field as the team approaches the end of the regular season, fortunately aligning his return just in time for a playoff run. This is surely music to Lions fans' ears, as they will pray to get one of their defensive captains back in time for what could be a very deep run in this year's postseason. So far, Detroit is 9-1 and is heavily favored to be the team coming out of the NFC and making it to the Super Bowl in February. Without Anzalone, the task definitely becomes larger, but as we continue to wish for a speedy return for the veteran linebacker, David Long should be able to fill in fairly well in his absence. Regardless, I want to wish Alex a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to the gridiron.
