Alim McNeill Agrees to Massive Extension with Lions

The Detroit Lions have signed defensive lineman Alim McNeill to a four-year contract extension, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. This move cements McNeill’s future in Detroit, signaling the team’s confidence in his ability to be a core part of their defense for years to come.

McNeill, a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a steady presence on the Lions' defensive line. Over his career, he has started 41 of 52 games, recording 120 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 24 quarterback hits. His consistency has been vital to the Lions' defense, and his presence on the field will be even more important with Aidan Hutchinson out for the season due to a leg injury.

So far in the 2024 season, McNeill has played 63% of the team’s defensive snaps, contributing eight tackles, 2.5 sacks, and four quarterback hits. His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks has only grown, and the Lions are counting on him to step up even more in Hutchinson’s absence.

McNeill expressed surprise about the timing of the extension, commenting, "This timing was crazy." The deal was finalized just as the Lions prepare for a critical NFC North showdown against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. With the Lions sitting at 4-1 and the Vikings at 5-0, this game could have significant implications for both the division standings and the playoff race. Coming off their first NFC North title in three decades last season, the Lions will need McNeill at his best to keep pace with their division rivals.
