Montgomery & Lions Agree on Two-Year Extension
The great city of Detroit is home to some of the toughest, grittiest football in the NFL today. This mentality starts at the top with head coach Dan Campbell, who consistently instills these values in his players and coaching staff. One player who embodies this sentiment is running back David Montgomery. Known for his hard-nosed running style and ability to punish defenders, Montgomery has formed a dynamic and feared backfield alongside Jahmyr Gibbs. This week, the Lions rewarded his efforts with a two-year contract extension worth $18.5 million.
Drafted 73rd overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has established himself as a reliable workhorse since entering the league. Over six seasons, he has accumulated 1,197 carries for 4,895 yards and 43 touchdowns. During his four-year stint with the Chicago Bears, Montgomery reached a career-high 1,070 rushing yards in 2020.
Montgomery joined the Lions in 2023 and quickly found a home in Detroit. In his debut season, he carried the ball 219 times for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added 16 receptions for 117 yards over 14 games, proving his versatility as both a runner and a receiver. His standout performance solidified his role in the Lions' offense and demonstrated his vital contribution to the team’s success.
This season, Montgomery has continued his strong play, rushing for over 270 yards and scoring four touchdowns in the first four games. His impact on the ground is a key factor in what makes Detroit’s offense so formidable. With this extension, Lions fans can breathe easy knowing that Montgomery will be a cornerstone of their offense for the next few seasons.
