Already Injury-Riddled Chiefs Hit Again With Rashee Rice Injury
This week, the Kansas City Chiefs will face the New Orleans Saints in what promises to be an exciting matchup. However, the Chiefs will be without their young rising star, wide receiver Rashee Rice, who has been placed on IR due to a knee injury. Rice sustained the injury in the Chiefs' previous game against the Chargers during a freak collision with QB Patrick Mahomes. The unfortunate incident happened during an overturned interception, and Mahomes has since expressed his regret over the play. The reality now is that the Chiefs will be without their top wide receiver for at least the next four weeks—an already critical blow compounded by the earlier loss of Hollywood Brown to injury.
Rice has been incredibly productive since entering the league last year. This season, he had three standout performances in the first few games, recording 103 yards, 75 yards, and 110 yards in games against the Ravens, Bengals, and Falcons, respectively. With 24 receptions and two touchdowns, it’s clear that Mahomes has leaned on Rice early this season, especially with Travis Kelce drawing heavy coverage. Now, with Rice sidelined, the Chiefs' offense faces a significant challenge, putting more pressure on Travis Kelce and veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Kelce, who had a slow start to the season, came alive last week with seven catches for 89 yards in a key win over the Chargers. He’ll need to continue that momentum as the offense will rely heavily on him in Rice’s absence. Meanwhile, JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has only recorded two catches so far this season, will likely see an increased role. His veteran presence will be crucial in helping to stabilize the receiving corps and maintain offensive productivity.
Rice’s injury has fueled speculation about the Chiefs potentially looking for outside help at wide receiver. One name circulating is Raiders star Davante Adams, an elite wideout who would certainly provide a massive boost. However, it’s unlikely that Las Vegas would trade a future Hall of Famer to a division rival without significant compensation. A more realistic target might be Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, a proven deep threat who has been a consistent performer for New York despite not having the opportunity to fully showcase his talent. Slayton has led the Giants in receiving yards each of the past four seasons and could fit in well with Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense.
Rice is scheduled to undergo a knee scope next week, which should provide more clarity on the long-term severity of his injury. Until then, the Chiefs will need to adapt and find ways to keep their offense firing without one of their key playmakers.
