McCaffrey to Miss Extended Time on IR

The 49ers will be without their best offensive weapon, Christian McCaffrey, until at least Week 4, as he has been officially placed on injured reserve. McCaffrey missed Week 1’s game against the New York Jets, with rumors circulating that he might return for Week 2. However, with his placement on IR, that possibility has been ruled out, and the focus now shifts to running back Jordan Mason, who impressed in McCaffrey’s absence.

Mason had an outstanding Week 1 performance against a formidable Jets defensive line, making key plays for the 49ers offense. An undrafted free agent signed by San Francisco in 2022, Mason didn’t have a significant role in the offense until this past week. He seized the opportunity, rushing for 147 yards on 28 carries, including a touchdown. Mason consistently wore down the Jets defense, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and delivering chunk plays that kept the offense moving.

This week, Mason will face a Vikings defense led by defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who did an excellent job limiting the Giants’ rushing attack to just 74 total yards and 3.5 yards per carry. However, San Francisco boasts a far more capable offensive line, particularly in the run game, and they will look to involve Mason early and often again. Expectations are high for the former undrafted rookie, especially after his breakout performance in Week 1. If last week’s showing is any indication, Mason is well-positioned to continue building on that success, and another strong game could lead the 49ers to victory.
