Fields to Start for Steelers in Week 1

One of the biggest offseason storylines in Pittsburgh was the quarterback battle between Justin Fields and former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson. For months, fans speculated on who would start in Week 1, until Head Coach Mike Tomlin announced that Wilson would be under center to begin the season. However, in a recent turn of events, Wilson has been sidelined with a calf injury, forcing the team to turn to former Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields to lead the offense against Atlanta.

Fields' career has been difficult to evaluate due to the challenging situation he faced in Chicago. Despite showing flashes of potential, he struggled to find consistency, leading to the Bears moving on from him in favor of first overall pick Caleb Williams. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh has placed considerable faith in Fields and sees him as a potential long-term solution, especially with Wilson’s advancing age. Fields' mobility ranks among the best in the league for quarterbacks, a skill he's demonstrated since entering the NFL in 2020.

Now, under the guidance of the best head coach he’s had in Mike Tomlin, Fields is expected to show growth in Pittsburgh’s offensive scheme. Having had a full offseason to gel with his new teammates and receiving a significant amount of first-team reps, Fields is primed for a second chance to prove himself. The question now is whether he can seize the opportunity and make the most of it.
