Maye Makes Strong Case for Week 1 Starting Job

Last night’s final preseason game between the Patriots and Commanders provided an extended look at Drake Maye, and he did not disappoint. Maye took over for veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who exited with a shoulder injury, and played the entire first half.

Maye made an immediate impact, leading an impressive opening drive that resulted in a touchdown. He completed 5 of 7 passes on that drive, including a touchdown pass to running back Kevin Harris. From there, Maye continued to impress, showcasing significant growth and development since his days at UNC. His footwork has improved considerably over the past few months, and his ability to read defenses was on full display. Despite the offensive line’s struggles in the first half, including eight penalties, Maye consistently made plays both through the air and on the ground. One standout moment saw Maye rolling out to his left to avoid pressure and finding a wide-open K.J. Osborn for a touchdown—though the play was ultimately called back due to a penalty on the offensive line. Still, Maye’s ability to make that play was a promising sign.

Even though Washington wasn’t playing their starters, Maye continued to show flashes of the player New England hopes he can become. He finished the night completing 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 17 rushing yards. It was an encouraging performance for the rookie, who is pushing to be the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1. With Brissett potentially sidelined by injury and Milton securely in place as the team’s third quarterback, there’s a strong chance Maye could get the call.

After last night’s performance, it wouldn’t be surprising if Maye starts even if Brissett is healthy. The Patriots' offense has simply looked better with Maye under center, and with the preseason now wrapped up, it seems only a matter of time before Head Coach Jarod Mayo names Maye as QB1. New England opens the season against the Bengals on September 8th, and they’ll need all hands on deck to contend with Cincinnati’s high-powered offense led by Joe Burrow. While no official announcement has been made yet, I expect we’ll hear from Mayo in the next few days—and I believe Drake Maye will get the nod.
