Chase Rumored to Hold Out Without New Extension
Wide receivers have been at the center of attention throughout this year’s NFL offseason. From trades to contract extensions, the position has dominated headlines, with big names like Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, and Brandon Aiyuk making waves. Yet, one name that has remained relatively under the radar is Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase.
Chase is undoubtedly one of the league's top talents at his position. His chemistry with quarterback Joe Burrow, dating back to their college days, has elevated the Bengals' offense to new heights since their arrival. With Burrow recently securing his major payday, the spotlight has now shifted to Chase as his contract negotiations loom. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, it appears that Chase has no intention of waiting, especially after witnessing other top receivers land lucrative deals. Former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has even suggested that Chase might hold out and refuse to play if he doesn't secure a new contract by the start of the season.
This situation puts Cincinnati in a precarious position, as they certainly want their top playmaker on the field when the season begins. Reports indicate that Chase is seeking a record-breaking contract extension worth nearly $40 million annually, which would surpass the current highest average held by his former LSU teammate, Justin Jefferson, at $35 million per year. Such a contract would set a new benchmark in the wide receiver market, likely influencing future negotiations for other top players at the position. However, there are few, if any, receivers better than Chase. In just three years in the NFL, he's earned Pro Bowl honors, a First-Team All-Pro selection, and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021. His production has been elite from the moment he stepped onto the field, amassing 268 receptions, 3,717 yards, and 29 touchdowns.
Chase’s remarkable numbers give him significant leverage in these negotiations, especially considering the Bengals' win-now mindset. Moreover, it’s almost certain that another wide receiver will reset the market next offseason, putting additional pressure on the Bengals to act swiftly or face the consequences. Given the circumstances, I fully expect Chase to secure a new contract. The Bengals can't afford to lose him, whether through free agency next year or a potential trade if negotiations falter. While the situation remains at a standstill for now, I anticipate that Chase will receive his extension in the coming weeks as we rapidly approach the start of the 2024 season.
