McPherson Latest Kicker to Land Extension
The Cincinnati Bengals are stacked with big-name players who continue to shine week after week. QB Joe Burrow, WR Ja'Marr Chase, and WR Tee Higgins dominate the NFL with their performances. However, kicker Evan McPherson, who may not yet be a household name, continues to excel and was recently rewarded for his efforts. McPherson is the latest kicker to secure a deal, following in the footsteps of Harrison Butker’s record-breaking contract. The former fifth-round pick agreed to a three-year, $16.5 million contract with Cincinnati, placing him among the top five kickers in total value, tied with Giants kicker Graham Gano.
McPherson has more than earned this payday through his first three seasons in the NFL. In his career, he has missed only one field goal under 40 yards and seven from 40-50 yards. His career field goal percentage of 84% is slightly above average for current kickers, but his extra point accuracy is particularly impressive. Last year, McPherson went 40-for-40 on extra points, and in three years with the team, he has missed only six PATs, all of which came in his first two seasons.
One of the standout aspects of McPherson’s game is his clutch performance in critical moments. In 2021, as a rookie, he converted three game-winning walk-off field goals in the regular season alone. He also added game-winning kicks in both the divisional round of the playoffs and the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kicking your team to the Super Bowl is no small feat, especially as a fifth-round rookie, and it speaks volumes about his ability under pressure. McPherson has what may be the most important trait for a kicker, and Cincinnati has recognized that by giving him this extension.
With Joe Burrow and company leading the team, expectations are sky-high in Cincinnati for another Super Bowl run. With a brand new contract, the Bengals are counting on their young kicker to once again help kick their team into the promised land.
