Veteran Gilmore Inks Deal with Vikings
One of the league's top veteran cornerbacks found a new home yesterday, as Stephon Gilmore agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings. The contract, worth $8 million in base salary, could reach up to $10 million with certain undisclosed incentives. At 34, Gilmore may be past his prime, but he still brings tremendous value to a team in his current form.
Last year, Gilmore played for the Dallas Cowboys after being acquired via trade from the Colts. He started all 17 games for Dallas in the absence of star corner Trevon Diggs and performed above expectations. Even at 33 years old, he played at an above-average level, earning a PFF grade of 74.4, placing him among the top 25 corners in the league. Known for his prowess in press-man coverage, Gilmore excelled once again, earning a 76.3% grade in press and being targeted on only 19.5% of his coverage snaps.
The former All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year is more than capable of handling another extensive workload. Minnesota will surely need it, as their depth at corner has been depleted due to injuries and the tragic passing of rookie Khyree Jackson. Gilmore will now start for his third team in as many years, but his physical size and ability should prove to be an upgrade over the rest of Minnesota’s roster.
For $10 million, this deal is a great value for both Gilmore and the Vikings. Gilmore gets his desired compensation and possibly a shot at a playoff run, depending on Sam Darnold’s performance, while Minnesota secures a quality veteran starter in August. Both sides should be pleased with this outcome, and it will be exciting to see how Gilmore impacts the Vikings' defense come Week 1.
