Giants Win First Preseason Game; Nabers Goes Target-less
Preseason action kicked off in the Meadowlands this past weekend with a Giants victory, as the G-Men secured a 14-3 win against Detroit in a low-scoring affair. With multiple storylines surrounding various rookies and unproven players, many eyes were on this game to see how Head Coach Brian Daboll’s squad would look as he enters his third year with the team.
Despite a rather slow game in the passing department, the Giants’ rushing attack was on full display. Two different running backs eclipsed 50 yards, including second-year player Eric Gray, who had an impressive 40-yard touchdown run. Gray was certainly one of the biggest bright spots on offense, if not the brightest. He rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown on only four carries, adding an impressive 46 yards on four catches.
The most surprising revelation on offense, however, was the lack of attention given to rookie WR Malik Nabers. With the sixth overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, the Giants picked LSU’s Malik Nabers to be their next great playmaker at wide receiver. Nabers didn’t play long in this game, being pulled after the first quarter. With expectations through the roof, many expected Nabers to make a play or two for his new team. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, as the rookie was held without a target in his limited action. One would imagine it would be a priority for the Giants to get their new weapon involved in the game plan if he’s going to suit up for preseason. Despite not having a target, Nabers still showcased his ability to get open on numerous occasions.
Defensively, the Giants put on a show, particularly with their front seven. The unit delivered a dominant performance, shutting down any offensive momentum the Lions could muster. One standout was interior linebacker Dyontae Johnson, who registered four total tackles and a sack, playing an integral part in the stout defense the Giants fielded. Fellow defender, defensive tackle Elijah Chatman, also had a fantastic game, recording three tackles and a sack, one of four total by the team. With both players fighting for roster spots, another strong performance this week could convince the coaching staff to keep them on for the long haul of a 17-game season.
With little time to waste before the next preseason game, Head Coach Brian Daboll will need to get his team ready to face Houston on Saturday. It’s been reported that rookie Malik Nabers tweaked his ankle in practice and may not play this Saturday out of caution, but we’ll have to wait for more updates from Coach Daboll. One way or another, the Giants will look to build off this Week 1 preseason win and hope to carry this success through the preseason and into the regular season as well.
