Williams Shines in Bears Preseason Debut
With the first weekend of preseason games behind us, we got an exciting first look at multiple rookies on various teams. Among the most notable was none other than first overall pick, Bears QB Caleb Williams. Williams entered the NFL with tremendous hype, and this past weekend we got our first real look at him in Bears gear. While his time on the field was brief, it was definitely a great start.
Williams played the first two series for Chicago, both of which resulted in field goals. His ability to operate both within and outside the pocket was on full display, even with the limited action. One play in particular caught the eyes of many: a screen pass that looked doomed from the start, but Williams managed to flick a pass to RB D'Andre Swift for a huge gain, setting up one of the field goals. Additionally, Williams made an impressive throw to the sideline while rolling to his right, a play that few QBs could execute.
The young QB finished his day 4/7 with 95 passing yards and 13 rushing yards. While these numbers don’t fully capture the potential Caleb brings to the table, they offer a glimpse of how good he could become in the regular season. If this performance is any indication of where he is as a player right now, the future of Chicago football is the brightest it’s been in a long time. Williams exudes a certain confidence that seems to be spreading throughout the locker room.
It is unknown if Williams will play in the team's second preseason game this weekend. Even with his successful debut, it would be beneficial to see him back out there. However, Chicago may opt to play it safe with their new franchise leader, which wouldn’t be surprising. Still, another series or two against a live defense could be valuable for his development and preparation for Week 1.
