Milton Raising Eyebrows at Patriots’ Training Camp

The talk of the town in New England this offseason has largely surrounded their number three overall pick, quarterback Drake Maye. Maye is the prototypical quarterback with an elite arm and desirable physical stature, which is why New England selected him to lead their franchise. With training camp well underway, multiple storylines have arisen across the league, and one in particular from New England has piqued my interest.

According to reports this week, sixth-round pick quarterback Joe Milton has raised numerous eyebrows, putting his raw talent on display as the apparent best-looking QB participating at Patriots camp. Milton came out of the University of Tennessee with tremendous arm talent. Some would go as far as to say he can throw a ball farther than anyone on the planet, and I would like to chime in and say that definitely could be a possibility. The word “cannon” doesn’t even start to describe the type of arm strength that Milton possesses. Arm strength of that level is comparable to the likes of Josh Allen, Pat Mahomes, and legends like Brett Favre and John Elway.

Let me not get ahead of myself, however. Milton was a sixth-round selection for a reason. He’s a raw talent who lacks the ability to maneuver a pocket, as well as read defenses, and can tend to have trouble with accuracy partially due to that rocket of an arm. He has flaws, as we all do, but the potential is undoubtedly there. The question for New England is how much they can draw out of that potential and what they can mold it into. Obviously, Drake Maye is going to get the bulk of the action out of the gate as the team has a real commitment to him being the third pick. Milton can make it interesting, though, if he continues to impress week to week. One thing is for sure: having two high-potential quarterbacks is a great problem to have, and New England is certainly glad to have it.
