Giants Had Interest in Maye and Daniels on Draft Night
With the release of the exceptional “Hard Knocks Offseason” featuring the New York Giants, we got a tremendous inside look at what it really means to manage an NFL franchise. Specifically, the show highlighted what it takes to properly prepare for the draft and the intricacies that go into having a successful Thursday-Sunday come springtime. One of the notable storylines to come out of the hit TV series was the interest the Giants had in moving up for a quarterback.
Heading into the draft, it was public knowledge that the Giants wanted to move up for a quarterback. Yet, the question loomed on which one they wanted and who they were looking to trade with. With the second pick in the draft held by division rival Washington Commanders, a potential trade scenario to move up to pick two was nearly guaranteed to be off the table. Many reports indicated that the Giants and Patriots discussed a potential swap that would move New York up to the third pick, which the show confirmed with footage of a phone call between the two teams' GMs. What we didn’t know was which of the QBs New York felt comfortable trading up for, and that’s where we found answers.
While preparing for the draft, GM Joe Schoen brought up the possibility of trading up for Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels to Head Coach Brian Daboll. Daboll immediately responded with a resounding “yes” when asked if he would be okay with either prospect if made available. Many envisioned Drake Maye to be the Giants' top priority, but it’s interesting that they had a real interest in the LSU quarterback as well.
Ultimately, the price would wind up being too high for New York to move up for a QB. That said, they seemed more than happy that LSU WR Malik Nabers was there at pick six to help bolster this young receiving corps. Thus far, there has been resounding praise for the WR during training camp, as he’s stolen the show according to many. The hunt for a QB will have to be put on hiatus for now, but sure enough, if things don’t pan out for current QB Daniel Jones, the Giants will be back on the chase next offseason.
