Caleb Williams Finally Signs Rookie Deal

There are many questions surrounding this year’s rookie contract situations, particularly why they are taking so long to get signed. Today, possibly the most notable player from this year’s draft, first overall pick Caleb Williams, has finally signed his rookie contract. The number one overall pick agreed to a four-year, $39 million deal that is fully guaranteed, with a fifth-year option. This was surely going to get done sooner or later, as Williams is Chicago’s new hope to lead their franchise to glory.

Rejuvenating a City

Chicago has had a rough go of it the past couple of years in all facets of their major sports teams. The Cubs, Bulls, White Sox, Bears, and Blackhawks have all had little to no playoff success as of late. However, much like the Blackhawks landing generational talent Connor Bedard first overall in last year's NHL draft, the Bears now have a shot at creating something special with Williams.

With a rocket arm, good scrambling ability, and high-level awareness in the pocket, Williams was a surefire pick at number one. The city of Chicago is one of the most sports-savvy cities in the entire country, and when they are winning, it makes their respective leagues better. With Caleb, the Bears have a chance to ignite a brand-new winning culture within the city, something it hasn't seen since the 2016 Chicago Cubs. While pressure of that magnitude may be heavy, no prospect is better suited to face it head-on than Williams, in my opinion. He’s had multiple instances where critics have attacked him for unjust reasons, such as wearing nail polish and crying with his mother after losing a game. Both of these instances are completely irrelevant to his ability as a quarterback, yet the media still dragged him through the mud because of it. Furthermore, he was one of the most highly touted prospects coming out of high school, so naturally, he had doubters there as well.

Ultimately, time will tell what becomes of Caleb Williams and his Bears career. While I do think he’s the best player coming out of this year's draft, that does not mean he is exempt from mistakes. His ball security as a scrambler needs to be addressed, as he fumbles way too much for the NFL level. Still, I believe he is the one who could turn the Chicago sports culture back into greatness, and one that its fans can be proud of.
