Tight End Waller Calls it a Career

The news of Darren Waller’s retirement may be a surprise to some, but to Giants fans, this has seemed likely for some months now. Waller spoke via his Instagram about how he has “lost love for the game” over these past few seasons. He cited injuries as part of the cause for his decision, notably mentioning a specific case last season that made him fear for his life. Waller has been a tremendous talent throughout his time in the NFL, and his decision should not be slandered but praised as one about overcoming adversity.

An Impressive Career:

Waller played for three teams during his eight-year career, most notably as a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. Waller amassed over 4,000 yards in his career, along with 20 touchdowns. His 2019 and 2020 seasons saw him go over 1,000 yards, with 11 total touchdowns in those seasons. His 2020 season netted him his one and only Pro Bowl appearance, and deservedly so, as he was one of the best tight ends in football that year, if not the best.

An Inspiring Journey:

Waller has spoken numerous times about his turbulent past with drug abuse. In college, Waller faced his biggest challenge overcoming this problem, which negatively impacted his draft stock coming into the NFL. These problems lingered with Waller continuously through his two years with the Ravens, leading to his suspension by the league. Darren knew it was time to change his life after that and sought help with rehab. He then dedicated his life to staying sober while also trying to relive his dream of being an NFL player. He was reinstated in 2018 and signed with the Raiders, where his career truly took off. Throughout his career, Waller made continuous efforts to help communities by aiding people struggling with drug addiction.
