The Biggest Winner of the 2024 NFL Offseason
The NFL offseason can be as rowdy and unpredictable as any event in modern entertainment. With players getting traded, cut, drafted, or retiring, turnover is always high and leads to numerous headlines. Some teams enter the season with huge anticipation, while others brace for another tough year. As always, there are winners and losers. So, without further ado, here is my biggest winner of the 2024 offseason.
Biggest Winner: Chicago Bears
Notable Acquisitions:
- Caleb Williams
- Keenan Allen
- Rome Odunze
- Kevin Byard
- D'Andre Swift
- Gerald Everett
The Chicago Bears had an offseason that should truly excite their fan base. The most notable acquisition is quarterback Caleb Williams, the number one overall pick and widely viewed as one of the best prospects in recent memory. Chicago has long been overdue for a franchise quarterback, and Williams could be the one to fill that void. However, this move alone didn’t make the Bears the biggest winner of the offseason.
First, they made a huge splash by acquiring Keenan Allen from the Chargers for a lowly fourth-round pick. At 32 years old, Allen is coming off his best statistical season, with over 1,200 yards, seven touchdowns, and 100 catches. A true number one receiver, Allen is both a great player and teammate. But Chicago didn't stop there; they added to their receiving corps by selecting Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze with the ninth pick in the draft. Odunze excels at contested catches and making plays after the catch. This WR trio, which also includes former Pro Bowler DJ Moore, will surely aid in the development of the offense and shows the front office's commitment to supporting a young QB.
In addition to bolstering their WR room, the Bears brought in running back D'Andre Swift from Philadelphia. Swift had an electric season last year, especially in the first half, rushing for 1,000 yards and five touchdowns, with an additional 200 yards and a touchdown through the air. His ability to impact a game both on the ground and through the air makes him a potential x-factor for this offense. Tight end Gerald Everett, another new acquisition, adds his dual-threat ability as a blocker and receiver. Last season, Everett had 400 yards and a touchdown while being one of the league's best blocking tight ends.
All these players are poised to provide an immediate impact on the Bears' offense in 2024. With multiple talented athletes spread across the field, it's exciting to speculate on how good this group can be next year. On the defensive side, safety Kevin Byard deserves recognition. At 30 years old, Byard is on the back end of his career, but he was once in the conversation for the NFL’s best safety. Last year, playing for the Eagles and Titans, Byard was still effective, registering 122 total tackles and an interception. He will be an immediate impact player on the field and in the locker room, bringing invaluable experience in high-leverage situations.
Look Ahead:
The moves made by the Chicago front office this offseason are likely to bear fruit. This team has done all the right things to build a young core that could potentially compete for the playoffs for the first time in a long while.
