Broncos Cut Russell Wilson

The story out of Denver yesterday answered one of the biggest questions of the offseason. Russell Wilson has been told by the Broncos front office that he will no longer be a part of the team moving forward. With this decision, Denver is waiving the white flag on this project but their decision will not come cheap. Denver will be forced to shell out 85 million dollars over the next two seasons to compensate for this decision. Denver currently holds the 12th pick in the first round and could potentially use it on a Quarterback if they like a particular prospect.

For Wilson, his options moving forward may not be as plentiful as they were when he was thrown around in trades a few years ago. Still, Wilson played fairly well last year, and certainly well enough to warrant a starting job. In 15 games played during the season Wilson posted three thousand yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. An impressive stat line for someone many considered to be “washed” just a season prior. With all that said, a few teams are going to be in the market for a veteran Quarterback. Teams like the Falcons, Vikings, Stealers, and maybe even Patriots could be potential suitors for Russ.

In 2022 Wilson signed a 5 year 245 million million-dollar contract with Denver. The contract terms require Denver to cover 40 million of his salary for this upcoming season. A scenario like this ensures that wherever Wilson goes, it will be for veteran minimum. This is a strong consideration in Wilson’s favor as he will not be a cap casualty for whatever team is trying to sign him.

The Quarterback carousel is quickly heating up this offseason with Wilson and Cousins atop the list of NFLs vets. With young rookies soon to be coming in as well, the NFL should see some exciting changes at its most valuable position.
