Chargers Fire Head Coach Brandon Staley
A move that could be seen coming from miles away has finally come to fruition. On Friday, the Los Angeles Chargers fired their Head Coach, Brandon Staley, after a disappointing tenure as the team leader.
Staley has had chance after chance before, finally, it all came crashing down. Staley was brought in initially to shore up this Chargers' defense that has been subpar for a long time. However, while the defense's cap hit increased with the incoming talent to bolster the unit, the play did not improve. Since joining the Chargers for the 2021 season, Staley's defenses have ranked 20th or below in yards and points every single year.
It would be one thing if these Chargers teams were deficient in talent on that side of the ball, but that is not the case. The Chargers are spending over 100 million dollars of cap space on their defense this year and still aren't getting results. Trading for big-time pass rusher Khalil Mack and signing Corner JC Jackson to a five-year deal have lead to poor results. The decision to even sign Jackson out of disparity for help on defense proved to blow up in their faces as they moved off the Corner halfway through his first season.
Staley's inability to fix this defense and his reluctance to innovate when things weren't working are precisely why we are here now. He landed this job because of his connection to the Rams' defenses when he was their coordinator. In hindsight, it‘s now clear it was the Rams‘ talent on that side of the ball that was the reason for the group's success.
